With recent news of Prince Harry’s engagement, I couldn’t help but write a post about my all-time favorite fashion icon: the late Princess Diana. The Princess of Wales not only had class, boundless compassion, and admirable leadership… but she had looks, honey.
In the early years of the limelight, Princess Diana began as a shy aristocrat; playing it safe with her wardrobe and adhering to the strict, prototypical dress code of a princess. It was until the mid to late 80’s that the public noticed a shift in wardrobe, as she began to dress more bold and exuded more confidence through her style.
She strategically pushed limits and danced on the line between what was acceptable and what was too daring for the cookie-cutter standards of a princess-and did it so elegantly. Which is why- even 20 years after her passing- Princess Diana still remains one of the most iconic figures in fashion.
My list of looks could go on forever, so these are my top picks:
As much of a renowned fashion icon Princess Diana was, there was a reason why she was known as the “People’s Princess”. She undoubtedly left her mark in history with her unwavering commitment to many humanitarian issues and worked tirelessly to make the world a better place. The way she used her global fame to shine light on issues that others were hesitant to speak on is one of the reasons I adore her.
One of her finest humanitarian moments (and one of my personal favorite moments), was her visit to London Middlesex Hospital in 1987 (the UK’s first unit dedicated to treating people with HIV and AIDS), where she did something that history would remember forever: she shook the hands of AIDS patients without wearing gloves.
(Below is a photo of her with an HIV-positive child in ’91)
As insignificant of a gesture it seems, back in the 80’s (when the disease was rapidly increasing and misinformation was rife), the public had an irrational fear of casual contact with people who had the disease. It was that moment alone that helped shatter negative stigmas around the world. This, and many countless moments throughout her years as a philanthropist, really showed people the depth of her compassion.
Her immeasurable charitable work and kind heartedness is why Princess Diana’s legacy extends far beyond fashion. May her beautiful soul rest in peace. ♥
